The King's Life:
A decade ago
today His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni was crowned as King of Cambodia. He was born
on 14th May 1953 in Phnom Penh, the country's capital and largest city. His
father was King-Father Norodom
Sihamoni who died in 2012 of a heart attack in Beijing, and
Queen Norodom Narindrapong, Cambodia's consort from 1952 to 1955 and again
from 1993 to 2004.
Before becoming a king, His Majesty was a known classical dancer and a
cultural ambassador in Europe. He can speak both French and Czech fluently as
he spent 20 years of his life in France and paid Prague a visit
regularly. He can also converse well in English and Russian.
His Majesty ascended the throne on 14th October, 2004 by a
nine-member throne council when his father
surprisingly abdicated the throne a week before. But he formally became the
King of Cambodia on 29th October 2004.
Rumor surrounding the King
King Sihamoni was known to be a bachelor with no kids (true), but Phnom Penh Daily News yesterday
(October 28, 2014), suggest the 61-year-old Cambodian monarch has secretly got hitched
to his long-term relationship.
The couple is said to have exchanged vows in an intimate morning
ceremony at a secret location, before few close friends and family members.
Fans of the King and the rumors surrounding him caused quite a stir on
twitter:
“Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni Get
Married? It should have beeeeeeeen meeeeeeeee!!!!!” — October 28, 2014
“Is it official? There has been so
many rumors about Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni” — October 28, 2014
There was no official statement from the King's rep, nor the couple
released a statement yet.
Well-wish
Congratulations, His Majesty. Congratulations, Cambodia!
Long live the King!
