Christians around the world are observing Holy Week. It is the last week of Lent and the week before Easter. Associated with it is the religious holiday of Friday of Sorrows, while the week itself includes Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday), Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. It does not include Easter Sunday, which is the beginning of another liturgical week.
In the Philippines, ASEAN's predominantly Catholic nation, Holy week is strongly observed. Businesses shut their operations down especially on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Some provinces reenact the scene of Jesus last moments on earth with His disciples. TV and radio programs sign off, and those who do operate are run by Catholic churches which feature religious programs.
Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are both national holidays. People in big cities head to the provinces to observe the Lent, and be with their family for long Easter weekend.
